AI Story Generator for a Short Story

An AI story generator plans a short story before it writes one. You get a title, characters and a beat-by-beat outline you can edit, then the story itself. You can also ask only for story ideas, writing prompts or a plot.

Plan

The Keeper's True Beacon

ExampleExample story written from the plan above.

The beam swung out over the water, and Ines watched it die. Not fade. Die. The light that should have gilded the bellies of passing freighters slid into the black swells and simply stopped, as if the sea had learned to swallow it. Three days later the supply boat knocked against the dock. Captain Voss tossed her a crate of tinned beef and squinted at the horizon. "Missing vessels," she said. "Four this month. The tide comes in wrong." Voss laughed. "Tide's a tide, Ines. You've been alone too long." That night she saw it climb. A humanoid shape rose from the surf, shoulders streaming, and walked up the cliff face where no path existed, its feet finding the wet rocks like stairs. She locked the tower. She checked the bolts twice. At dawn, wet footprints crossed the lamp room floor, and the air tasted of brine so thick she gagged. The footprints led nowhere. Then the voices started. Her mother's, gentle through the door. A child crying. And Voss, Voss's voice, flat and certain, calling from the rocks below. "Ines, the boat's taking water. Come down." She didn't. In the cellar she found the old logbook, its spine swollen with damp. The last keeper before her had written in a shaking hand: Doused the lamp. It followed us inland. They found us in the meadow, drowned. Ines climbed the tower with a fire axe. She stood before the great lens, her own reflection warped in its glass, and swung. The crash echoed down the spiral stair. Darkness poured over the coast. Below, something screamed, a vast, wet, disappointed sound, and slid back into the water. At dawn she stood on the cliff. The sea lay flat and silver. She gathered driftwood and lit a small fire, and its thin orange flame burned steady, pointing out to whatever ships were still out there, still looking for the shore.

Limits and privacy

  • Free, with no sign-up. English only. Stories run from about 150 to 2,400 words depending on the length you pick. The shared tool limit is 6 runs a minute and 30 runs a day for each visitor.
  • Your premise and plan are sent to Bookeen and to a third-party AI model provider when you press a button. Bookeen does not store them, and the provider handles them under its own terms. Don’t paste confidential material.
  • The story is written by an AI model. It will not be perfect, so read it, edit it and make it yours. Check the rules of any contest, magazine or platform you submit to about AI-assisted work.
  • Requests for harmful or prohibited content are refused, and the result is checked before it is shown. A run does not spend Studio credits.

What Is an AI Story Generator?

An AI story generator writes a story from a premise you supply, instead of asking you to draft every sentence first. Many tools jump straight to prose. This one is also a short story generator and a plot generator: it shows the plan, lets you change it, and only then writes. The hard part is a story that ignores the idea you typed. Editing the beats is how you stop that. You can stop at story ideas or prompts if you do not want a full draft. People also search for an AI story writer, which is this same job: a draft from a premise, not a scene you already wrote. The page does not write adult or unrestricted stories, and it is not a general chat.

How the AI Story Generator Works

Plan the story

The first request asks for a title, one to five characters and five to eight beats. Names you provide are used.

  • You choose genre, tone, length and point of view before the plan.
  • Bookeen checks that the plan is complete and asks for one repair if it is not.
  • Ideas, prompts and plot twists skip the story and return a short list.

Edit the plan

The plan is editable text. The story is written from your version, not from the first draft of the plan.

  • Change a beat that only describes, so that something happens.
  • Rewrite a character’s role until it says what they want.
  • Generating again without editing repeats the same instruction.

Write, then check

The model writes in the length and point of view you chose. Bookeen checks the result before it is shown.

  • Length has to fall in the range you picked.
  • The planned characters have to appear.
  • Chat-style or markdown residue is rejected, with one repair attempt.

Why Use This AI Story Generator

A plan you can change first

Bookeen shows the outline and writes the short story from the beats you keep. You can also stop at a plot, a prompt or a list of ideas.

A chat writes when you say so

ChatGPT or Claude will draft a story inside a conversation. Use them when you want to talk through the scene. Use this AI story generator when you want the plan and the story as separate steps.

Who the AI Story Generator Is For

Short-story writers

Use it when you have a premise and want a draft to react to.

  • Pick flash, short or medium length before you plan.
  • Edit the beats before you press Write.
  • Rewrite the opening in your own voice.
  • Check a magazine’s rules before you submit.

Novelists testing a scene

Use the plot generator mode when you only need the shape.

  • Choose plot twists or ideas instead of a full story.
  • Keep one beat and discard the rest.
  • Name the characters first so the plan uses them.
  • Move a keeper into your chapter outline.

Teachers and students

Use it for practice, and follow the assignment’s rules.

  • Label the result as model-written if the class requires that.
  • Edit until the sentences are ones you would sign.
  • Do not submit an unedited draft to a contest that forbids it.
  • Use prompts mode when the exercise is the idea, not the prose.

Writers who want a prompt

Use ideas or prompts when you are stuck before the first sentence.

  • Generate a short list.
  • Pick one and load it back as the premise.
  • Ignore the ones that are not your genre.
  • Write the next paragraph yourself if the draft is not the point.

How to use the AI Story Generator

  1. Describe your premise, then choose a genre, a tone, a length and the point of view.
  2. Press Plan the story and read the outline. Change the title, characters or beats until the plan is what you want.
  3. Press Write the story to get the full text.
  4. Copy or download the story, edit the plan and write again, or continue the idea in Bookeen.

How to Improve the Story

Start with the plan

Most weak stories have a weak plan. Change the beats so each one makes something happen, and cut the ones that only describe.

Give the characters a want

Edit a character’s role so it says what they want and what stands in the way. That detail carries through into the scenes.

Read for the voice

Check the opening and the ending first. Rewrite any sentence that doesn’t sound like something you would say.

Keep what is yours

If a detail in the story surprises you, decide whether to keep it. The tool offers a draft, and the decisions are yours.

What You Can Ask the AI Story Generator For

Plan first

The first step asks an AI model for a title, one to five characters and five to eight one-sentence beats. If you give character names they are used. Bookeen checks the plan is complete and asks for one repair if not.

Your edits count

The plan is shown as editable text. When you press Write the story, your edited plan is what goes to the model, so changing a beat really changes the story.

Writing, then checks

The model writes the story in the length and point of view you chose. Bookeen checks the length range, that the planned characters appear, and that the text has no chat-style or markdown residue, then asks for one repair if needed.

Ideas, prompts and plot twists

These modes skip the story and return a short list you can use as a starting point. Pick one to carry it back into the premise.

Use the AI Story Generator with Your Draft

Sudowrite

If you already draft fiction in Sudowrite, use this page when you want a separate plan you can edit before any prose.

ChatGPT

Paste a finished short story into ChatGPT only if you want to discuss a revision. The scene assistant on Bookeen is the tool that continues a passage you already have.

Google Docs

Paste the story into Docs to line-edit. The plan stays the source of what the draft was supposed to do.

Bookeen

Continue the premise in Bookeen when the short story should become a book. Generating a story here does not spend Studio credits.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI story generator?

An AI story generator writes a story from your premise. This one plans the title, characters and beats first, lets you edit that plan, and then writes.

How do I get a short story from an idea?

Describe the premise, choose the length, and press Plan the story. After you edit the beats, press Write the story. A short story here is about 500 to 1,200 words.

Can I use it as a plot generator?

Yes. The plot generator mode returns twists instead of a full story. You can also ask for story ideas or writing prompts.

How does the AI story generator use my edits?

The AI story generator writes from the plan on the page, including your edits. Changing a beat changes the instruction the model receives.

How long can the story be?

Flash fiction is about 150 to 400 words, a short story about 500 to 1,200 words, and a medium story about 1,200 to 2,400 words.

Can I use the story I generate?

Check the rules of any contest, magazine or platform you submit to, since some limit AI-assisted work. Edit the story so it is truly yours before you publish it.

Is my premise stored?

Bookeen does not store it. It is sent to a third-party AI model provider to write the plan and the story, so don’t paste confidential material.

Can I get story ideas without a full story?

Yes. Choose Ideas, Prompts or Plot twists to get a short list, then pick one to use as your premise.

Does the AI story generator write a whole novel?

No. The AI story generator stops at a medium story of about 2,400 words. A book is a separate tool and, after that, the full creator in Bookeen.

What will it refuse?

Requests for harmful or prohibited content are refused. The page is not a place for adult or unrestricted stories.

How is this different from the story writing assistant?

This AI story generator starts from a premise. The story writing assistant starts from a scene you already wrote and continues or revises that passage.

Does generating a story spend Bookeen credits?

No. An AI story generator run does not spend Studio credits. The limit is 6 runs a minute and 30 runs a day for each visitor.
