A name generator produces names you can use in a story: a character name, a place name or a pen name. Baby-name sites, company-name tools and game-nickname tools answer a different question, and this page does not. The hard part of naming a book is not finding one pretty word. It is finding names that are easy to say, hard to confuse with each other, and plausible for the world. Bookeen does that in the browser from syllable patterns and culture lists, and it can rank a batch as a character name generator, a fantasy name generator or a pen name generator.
Start with the job the name has to do. A character, a place and a pen name use different lists.
The name generator runs in your browser. The same settings and seed return the same names.
Describe the character in one line if you want a ranking. The model can only pick from the batch already on the page.
Bookeen keeps character names, place names and pen names in one name generator, shows the pattern it used, and lets you star a short list before you write.
Behind the Name is where you look up the history of a real given name. Use it when you need a sourced meaning, which this generator does not invent.
Use it when the cast needs names that will survive a whole book.
Use the fantasy name generator styles when the world is invented.
Use the pen name generator when you need a byline to try on.
Use it when a story needs one or two names and you are about to draft.
A name that is hard to say will be hard to read for hundreds of pages. Read your favorites aloud and drop the ones you stumble on.
Two characters whose names start with the same letter or have the same length are easy to confuse. Pick names that differ in their first letter and rhythm.
Short names can match an existing character, brand or real person. Search the name together with “book” or “novel” before you publish. Bookeen does not check trademarks or give legal advice.
A culture list gives you real, common names, not research. If your character comes from a specific place and time, confirm the name suits that era and region.
Names for elves, dwarves, orcs, vampires, vikings, sci-fi and other genres are built from syllable patterns that Bookeen wrote for each style: a set of starting sounds, middle sounds and endings weighted for that genre. The same seed produces the same batch.
Culture lists contain common given names and surnames assembled by Bookeen for each culture, including English, Irish and Scottish, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Norse, Roman, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Arabic. Chinese, Japanese and Korean names are shown in Latin letters only. No meanings are shown, because we have not verified etymologies and do not guess.
Towns, fantasy towns, sci-fi planets, spaceships and kingdoms use their own pattern sets, so a spaceship sounds different from a village.
Every batch is filtered for length, repeats, a short list of offensive words and a short list of famous fictional characters. It is a safety net rather than a full review, so check any name you plan to publish.
When you describe a character, an AI model ranks names from the batch that was already generated and adds a one-line reason. It cannot invent names, and any name outside the batch is thrown away. The reasons are suggestions about sound and feel, not facts about a name’s origin.
Paste the starred names into a character sheet in Scrivener so the cast stays consistent while you draft.
Drop the list at the top of a Docs outline before the scenes start using the names.
Look up a culture-list name there when you need a published meaning. This page does not supply one.
Send a favorite name into Bookeen as part of the idea for a story or a book. Generating names on this page does not spend Studio credits.

A name generator for stories suggests character names, place names or pen names from a genre or a culture. This one runs in your browser and can rank a batch against a short description.
The character name generator starts when you choose Character, pick a genre or culture, and press Generate names. Star the ones you can say aloud.
The fantasy name generator joins starting sounds, middle sounds and endings that Bookeen wrote for that style, then filters length, repeats, offensive words and a short list of famous characters.
The pen name generator can suggest a byline to try. Search it before you publish, because it may match an existing author, brand or person. Bookeen does not give legal advice.
Culture lists in the name generator use real, common given names and surnames. Fantasy, sci-fi and place names are invented from syllable patterns. The page does not show meanings.
You can use a generated name as a starting point. A name can still match an existing character, trademark or person, so search it before you publish.
You can choose from fourteen cultures, including English, Irish and Scottish, Norse, Roman, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Arabic. They are not tied to a century, so historical fiction still needs a period check.
No. The name generator keeps favorites in this page until you close or reload it. Copy them or download a text file.
No. Matching only ranks names the name generator already produced. Anything outside that batch is discarded.
Yes. Local name lists have no daily cap. AI matching uses the shared tool limit of 6 runs a minute and 30 runs a day for each visitor, and it does not spend Studio credits.
Behind the Name documents real names and meanings. This name generator invents fantasy and place names and does not claim etymologies.
ChatGPT can suggest any name in a chat. This name generator only returns names from its lists and patterns, and the optional ranking cannot leave that batch.
